When you need to resize an image
Resizing is almost always driven by a requirement someone else set:
- A form specifying dimensions: Application portals frequently state an exact pixel size for photos.
- Profile and avatar images: Platforms crop or reject images that are not close to the size they expect.
- Website and blog images: Serving a 4000px image in a 800px slot wastes bandwidth for no visible gain.
- Getting under a size limit: Halving the dimensions cuts the pixel count to a quarter, shrinking the file dramatically.
Why resizing beats compressing for large files
A 4000x3000 photo holds twelve million pixels. Displayed in a 800-pixel-wide slot, all but a fraction of those are discarded by the browser anyway — you are storing and transmitting detail nobody ever sees.
Halving both dimensions to 2000x1500 leaves three million pixels: a quarter of the data, before any compression is applied. That is a far larger saving than compression alone can achieve, and because you removed pixels rather than approximating them, what remains stays sharp.
This is why images that look poor after heavy compression often look fine after resizing. The usual mistake is squeezing a huge image into a small file size while keeping dimensions nobody needs.
Aspect ratio, and why stretching looks wrong
Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height. Change one without the other and the image distorts — faces widen, circles become ovals. It is immediately obvious to a viewer even when they cannot say why.
With the ratio locked, entering one dimension derives the other automatically. If you need to hit an exact box that does not match your image's proportions, resize to fit inside it and then crop the remainder rather than stretching to fill it.

Will resizing reduce my file size?
Yes, usually a great deal. Halving both dimensions leaves a quarter of the pixels, which is a much bigger saving than compression alone.
Can I make an image larger?
Not usefully. Enlarging cannot invent detail that was never captured, so the result looks soft. We return the original rather than produce a blurry upscale.
Will my image look stretched?
Not unless you unlock the aspect ratio. By default proportions are preserved, so entering one dimension derives the other.
What formats can I resize?
JPG, PNG and WebP images are all supported.
Should I resize or compress?
Resize when a specific width and height is required; compress when a file-size limit in KB is the problem. For very large photos, doing both gives the best result.
