When you need to crop
Cropping is about removing what should not be in frame, or reshaping for a destination:
- Tidying up a photo: Remove distracting background or empty space around the subject.
- Preparing a profile picture: Most platforms want a square, and will crop badly if you do not.
- Trimming a scan: Cut away the desk or scanner lid captured around the page.
- Reshaping before a resize: Crop to the right proportions first so resizing does not distort.
Crop before you resize, not after
If an image needs both, crop first. Cropping decides which part of the picture survives; resizing decides how many pixels that part is stored at. Doing it the other way round means you resize pixels you are about to throw away, and you end up with fewer than you wanted in the area you kept.
Cropping to the destination's proportions also removes the risk of distortion later. A square target from a landscape source needs a crop — resizing alone would squash it.
How cropping affects file size
Cropping reduces file size roughly in proportion to the area removed, because the discarded pixels are simply not stored. Cutting a photo in half removes about half the data.
That makes it a useful first step when fighting an upload limit, and unlike compression it costs nothing in quality — the pixels you keep are untouched. If you can afford to lose part of the frame, cropping is the cheapest saving available.
