When converting JPG to PNG makes sense
PNG is the right target when the format itself is the requirement:
- Software that only accepts PNG: Some tools and upload forms specify it exactly.
- An image you will edit repeatedly: PNG avoids compounding losses across saves.
- Screenshots and graphics: Flat colour and text keep sharper edges in PNG.
- A base for adding transparency: You cannot add transparency to a JPG, but you can to the PNG.
Why the PNG comes out larger
PNG compresses losslessly by finding repetition. That works brilliantly for flat colour, sharp edges and text, and poorly for photographs, where almost every pixel differs slightly from its neighbour.
JPEG takes the opposite approach, discarding detail the eye is unlikely to miss. So a photograph as PNG is routinely several times larger than the same photograph as JPEG, at no visible benefit — the detail JPEG removed is already gone.
For screenshots and graphics the calculation reverses, and PNG can be both smaller and visibly better.
Transparency is not added by converting
PNG supports transparency; JPG does not. Converting one to the other gives you a file capable of holding transparency, but it does not create any — every pixel in the source is opaque, so every pixel in the result will be too.
To actually get a transparent background you need an editor to remove it after conversion. Converting is the enabling step, not the whole job.
