When you need a passport-sized photo
Almost always because a form has stated an exact size and rejected what you have:
- Passport or visa applications: Each authority publishes its own dimensions.
- Exam and admission forms: Education portals typically specify both pixels and a KB ceiling.
- Job applications and ID cards: Employers and institutions often want a passport-style photo.
- Government service portals: Registration systems commonly require a standard photo size.
Dimensions and file size are separate requirements
Most application forms impose both: an exact pixel size and a maximum file size in kilobytes. They are independent, and meeting one does nothing for the other. A correctly-sized photo can still be rejected for being too many kilobytes.
Resize first, then compress. Resizing removes pixels, which reduces file size substantially on its own — often enough that little compression is needed afterwards, which keeps the photo looking better than compressing a full-resolution image down to the same limit.
If your form also states a KB ceiling, our compression pages are pre-set for the common targets — 50KB and 100KB are the usual figures for photo uploads.
Getting a usable photo before you resize
Start with a plain, evenly lit background and a straight-on head-and-shoulders framing. Most rejections are about the photo itself rather than its dimensions — shadows behind the head, an angled face, or too much or too little of the frame taken up by it.
Crop close to the proportions you need before resizing. If your requirement is taller than it is wide and your photo is landscape, resizing alone will distort it — crop to roughly the right shape first, then set the exact pixels.
