When an upload keeps getting rejected
Almost every image upload failure comes down to one of these:
- A form stating a maximum in KB: The most common case, and the one this page is for.
- A photo straight from a phone: Modern phone images are several megabytes by default.
- A scanned document: Scans are large because of their resolution, not their content.
- A slow connection timing out: Smaller files complete where large ones stall.
Why forms impose these limits
A portal expecting hundreds of thousands of submissions multiplies every uploaded file by that number. The difference between 100KB and 5MB per person is the difference between manageable storage and an enormous bill, so the ceilings tend to be firm rather than advisory.
Small files also upload reliably on poor connections, which matters when a deadline is involved and people are submitting from mobile networks. That is why limits are often stricter than seems necessary.
Resizing helps more than compressing alone
If your image is far larger in pixels than it needs to be, reducing the dimensions first is more effective than compressing at full resolution. A 4000-pixel-wide photo squeezed to 100KB looks noticeably worse than the same photo resized to 1000 pixels and then compressed to 100KB.
The reason is that compression has to work far harder to hit the target when there are four times as many pixels to store. Removing the excess pixels first leaves the budget to be spent on the ones you keep.
